In the case of vegetable soup, one phase would be the liquid soup itself. This phase contains vitamins, minerals and other components dissolved in the water. This phase would be homogeneous. After a few processes, the tap water is made usable for household purposes.

However, some undesirable substances are still present in the water, which can make tap water unfit for drinking or human consumption.

You would have heard cases of water intoxication or other water borne diseases like typhoid, cholera etc.

Therefore, tap water is further processed or purified to make it fit for consumption. Three methods are commonly used in various water treatment systems:

• reverse osmosis: In this water is directed against osmotic pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. It removes the impurities and salts but allows the minerals to pass through, resulting in clean water.

• Deionization: It removes the minerals, salts, impurities, etc. from the water.

• Distillation: In this process, water is boiled and the steam obtained is collected in a vessel, which is then cooled and turned back into water.

This removes all minerals, salts, impurities etc. from the water and you have distilled water.

The distilled water is therefore obtained after the purification of tap water using the distillation technique. It is considered good for human consumption as it clearly removes any disease-causing microbes or other contaminants.

However, this process also deprives the water of the vital minerals and salts needed for the active functioning of the human body.

Therefore, consuming distilled water over a long period of time can lead to deficiency diseases.

Why does tap water conduct electricity and distilled water doesn't?

Tap water consists of various minerals and salts. When these salts and minerals are dissolved in water, they dissociate into their constituent ions.

These ions are freely mobile entities that carry their own charge, both positive and negative.

To pass electricity through tap water, a positive (cathode) and a negative (anode) electrode are inserted after they have been connected to a charge source.

When the charge is applied by tap water, the ions present begin to respond to the electric field according to their charge.

The positive ions are attracted to the anode while negative ions are attracted to the cathode. Therefore, with the charge movement, the current begins to flow through the tap water.

Distilled water, on the other hand, is free of minerals or salts and therefore contains no ions. Since the ions or charged particles are responsible for the current flow, distilled water does not conduct electricity.
